Tsotsi (which means “thug” in township patois) is a 2005 film directed by Gavin Hood. The film is an adaptation of the novel Tsotsi, by Athol Fugardis. Set in Soweto, one of South Africa’s notoriously crime-ridden townships just outside of Johannesburg. The story is based on Tsotsi, the name of the central character, an orphan, played by Presley Chweneyagae who steals a car only to discover a baby in the back seat and inadvertently ends up having to look after the young baby which brings about a change in him that couldn’t be foreseen.The film won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.
